Wine Core Values

When it comes to any expensive hobby, I think it’s important to have rules to lean on when things go sideways.

So when someone looks at me like I just bought a Porsche when I tell them how much the wine they’re drinking cost, I can feel confident in my choices.

Here are my 4 core values when it comes to extravagant purchases:

1. Quality Above All Else

Quality over quantity. Quality over brand. Life is way too short to drink crappy anything.

2. Spend the Same Amount as You Give

If you can’t afford to be generous, you can’t afford the wine purchase. One of my personal resolutions this year was to “be outrageously generous.” This is one way to put that in action: Match extravagance with equal amounts of generosity.

3. Share with EVERYONE

Don’t hoard the good stuff or be stingy on pours. Share what you love with anyone at your table, no wine knowledge required.

4. Stay Curious

Don’t cling to pretext and say, “well I ONLY like [insert safe choice here].” It comes across as small-minded and closed off to new experiences. Try the weird grapes, the funky colors, the wines from areas you can’t pronounce. Staying in a box ultimately limits joy.

While these are my wine commandments, they all can be summarized by my ultimate core value in life:

    Don’t be a pretentious asshole.
